Vitamin B12 & Folic Acid Test

Anemia Testing

A vitamin B12 and folic acid test is a blood test that measures the levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid in the body. These two nutrients are essential for proper functioning of the nervous system, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis.

Low levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid can lead to a condition called megaloblastic anemia, which causes fatigue, weakness, and neurological symptoms. High levels of these vitamins can indicate certain health conditions such as liver disease or leukemia.

Doctors may order a vitamin B12 and folic acid test if a patient is experiencing symptoms of vitamin deficiency, has a family history of vitamin deficiencies, or has certain medical conditions that can affect vitamin absorption.

To prepare for the test, patients may be asked to fast for a few hours before the blood draw. Results of the test can help doctors determine if vitamin supplementation is necessary.
