Cancer Antigen 125 Test

Cancer and Tumor Marker Tests

The Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125) test is a blood test used to measure the levels of CA-125, a protein produced by cells lining certain organs in the body, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and lining of the abdomen. The CA-125 test is primarily associated with ovarian cancer, as elevated levels of CA-125 can be indicative of ovarian cancer or other gynecological conditions.

While the CA-125 test is not diagnostic on its own, it is used as a tumor marker to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian cancer. In addition to ovarian cancer, elevated CA-125 levels can also be seen in other conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and certain noncancerous conditions of the reproductive system.

Typically, healthcare providers use the CA-125 test in conjunction with other diagnostic tests, imaging studies, and physical exams to evaluate and monitor ovarian cancer and other related conditions. Serial CA-125 measurements over time can help track treatment response, detect recurrence, or assess disease progression.

The CA-125 test may also be utilized in patients with a known history of ovarian cancer to monitor disease activity or response to treatment. However, it is important to note that CA-125 levels can be influenced by factors other than cancer, and further testing is often required to confirm a diagnosis or assess disease status accurately.

Although the CA-125 test is commonly associated with ovarian cancer, it can provide valuable information in various clinical settings for the assessment and management of gynecological conditions. Healthcare providers rely on the CA-125 test as a diagnostic tool to aid in the early detection, monitoring, and personalized treatment of diseases affecting the reproductive system, particularly ovarian cancer.
