Lactose Tolerance Test

Gastrointestinal Health Tests

A lactose tolerance test is a diagnostic test used to determine if an individual is able to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and dairy products. It is commonly used to diagnose lactose intolerance, which is characterized by symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps after consuming lactose-containing foods.

During the test, the individual is asked to fast overnight and then drink a liquid that contains a high concentration of lactose. Blood samples are taken before drinking the lactose solution and at regular intervals afterwards to measure blood glucose levels. If the individual is able to digest lactose properly, their blood glucose levels will rise within a certain time frame. However, if they are lactose intolerant, their blood glucose levels may not rise, indicating that they are unable to digest the lactose.

It is important to note that this test is not always conclusive, and additional testing may be needed to confirm a diagnosis of lactose intolerance. It is also important to consult with a healthcare provider before undergoing this test, as they can provide guidance on preparation and interpretation of the results.
