Hepatitis A, B & C Panel

Hepatitis Testing

A hepatitis A, B, and C panel is a group of blood tests used to detect and diagnose infections with these three types of hepatitis viruses. Hepatitis A, B, and C are viral infections that affect the liver and can cause symptoms such as jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, and nausea.

The panel typically includes tests for:

1. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) antibodies: These antibodies indicate whether a person has been infected with hepatitis A virus in the past or has immunity to the virus from vaccination.

2. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg): This antigen is present in the blood of individuals who are currently infected with hepatitis B virus. It is the earliest indicator of acute or chronic hepatitis B infection.

3. Hepatitis B surface antibodies (anti-HBs): These antibodies indicate immunity to hepatitis B virus from past infection or vaccination.

4. Hepatitis B core antibodies (anti-HBc): These antibodies indicate previous or ongoing hepatitis B infection.

5. Hepatitis C antibodies: These antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to hepatitis C virus infection. A positive result indicates past or current infection with hepatitis C virus.

4. Hepatitis C viral load: This test measures the amount of hepatitis C virus in the blood and is used to monitor the progress of treatment for hepatitis C infection.

The hepatitis A, B, and C panel helps healthcare providers diagnose and manage patients with hepatitis infections and determine their immune status. Treatment for hepatitis A, B, and C infections may include antiviral medications, supportive care, and vaccination for prevention. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider for proper evaluation and management of hepatitis infections.
