Testosterone Test - Total

Hormone Testing

A testosterone test, also known as a total testosterone test, measures the total amount of testosterone in the blood. Testosterone is a male sex hormone that plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as the testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as muscle mass, body hair, and deepening of the voice.

The normal range for total testosterone levels in adult men is typically between 300 to 1,000 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter). Low testosterone levels, also known as hypogonadism, can have a variety of symptoms including fatigue, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, depression, and decreased muscle mass. On the other hand, high testosterone levels can lead to increased aggression, acne, and prostate issues.

A testosterone test is typically ordered by a healthcare provider if they suspect a hormonal imbalance or if a patient is experiencing symptoms related to low or high testosterone levels. The test involves a simple blood draw, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Treatment for abnormal testosterone levels may include hormone replacement therapy, lifestyle changes, or medication.

It is important to consult with a healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance, as untreated low or high testosterone levels can have serious health consequences. Testing and monitoring testosterone levels can help ensure optimal health and well-being.
