Calcium (Blood Test)

Vitamin and Nutritional Testing

A calcium blood test measures the amount of calcium in your blood, which is crucial for many bodily functions, including bone health, muscle contraction, and nerve signaling. Calcium exists in two forms in the bloodstream: free or ionized calcium, which is active and available for use by the body, and bound calcium, which is attached to proteins and other molecules. A calcium test can provide important insights into your overall health, as abnormalities in calcium levels may indicate problems with your parathyroid glands, kidneys, or bones.

Abnormal calcium levels can manifest as either hypercalcemia (high calcium levels) or hypocalcemia (low calcium levels). Hypercalcemia can result from various conditions such as hyperparathyroidism, certain cancers, and excessive vitamin D intake. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and confusion. Conversely, hypocalcemia may arise from vitamin D deficiency, hypoparathyroidism, or certain medications, with symptoms including muscle cramps, tingling sensations, and seizures.

Doctors typically recommend a calcium blood test if someone exhibits symptoms linked to abnormal calcium levels or as part of routine health assessments. It is also used to monitor conditions affecting calcium metabolism, such as chronic kidney disease or hormonal disorders. To ensure accurate results, patients may be advised to fast or avoid certain supplements before the test. This simple blood test, while often overlooked, plays a vital role in diagnosing and managing various health conditions.
