Lipoprotein (a) Test, Lp(a)

Cardiac Health and Cholesterol

The lipoprotein (a) test, also known as the Lp(a) test, is a blood test used to measure the level of lipoprotein (a) in the blood. Lipoprotein (a) is a type of lipoprotein that is made up of a molecule called apolipoprotein(a) attached to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

High levels of Lp(a) have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke. Individuals with a family history of cardiovascular disease or high cholesterol may be recommended to have their Lp(a) levels tested.

The Lp(a) test is typically ordered as part of a lipid panel, which measures different types of cholesterol and fats in the blood. Results of the test are typically reported in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Treatment for high Lp(a) levels usually involves lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and possibly medications to lower cholesterol levels.
