Folic Acid (Folate) Test

A folic acid test, also known as a folate test, is a blood test that measures the levels of folic acid, or folate, in the blood. Folic acid is a B vitamin that is essential for cell growth and reproduction. Adequate levels of folic acid are important for the formation of red blood cells, DNA synthesis, and the prevention of birth defects in pregnant women.

The test is usually ordered if a healthcare provider suspects a folic acid deficiency, which can lead to symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, irritability, shortness of breath, and poor concentration. Folic acid deficiency can be caused by inadequate dietary intake, alcoholism, malabsorption disorders, certain medications, and certain medical conditions.

A folic acid test can help diagnose a deficiency and determine the appropriate treatment, which may include increasing folic acid intake through supplements or dietary changes.
